On reflection, perhaps last week wasn’t the best time to have planted out my cosseted, greenhouse raised broad beans, although this photo does illustrate the virtues of raised beds rather neatly. Fingers crossed the waters will subside soon. Always prone to waterlogging, our allotment plot has on this occasion escaped relatively unscathed (there are others on the site that are completely submerged) and the plus side I was able to transfer buckets full of the wet stuff into our water butts, to await the long, hot (ahem) summer.
Unfortunately, on the other side of the plot, the raised bed currently filled with tiny emergent leek seedlings, is not faring so well. Back to the greenhouse to sow a backup crop, I think.
HA! Great website – very smart, so English!
As far as beans go, well we can’t compete in that department but I can proudly announce I haven’t bought a lettuce since January – my pots of 12 plants have endured all manner of invasions by snails, slugs and caterpillars and simply refuse to let up, even as we move into serious Autumn. My Rocket continues to rocket and the chives, well, don’t get me started – they are practically spring onions. Must be the lack of ozone down ‘ere.
glad to see you are unchanged as ever – look forward to more pithy commentary – hope the weather dries you all out!
Hello Julia – glad you like the site and to hear that your ‘salad days’ are so productive on t’other side of the world! I’m off to Chelsea Flower Show next week so watch this space….a pithy post should follow!
